What The Nations Is Like

For most of the 20th century, The Nations was a blue-collar neighborhood of clapboard and cinder-block homes, with mills and industry along Centennial Boulevard. Over the last decade or so, many of those small homes have been renovated or replaced with tall, narrow two- and three-story homes, so the housing stock now runs from original cottages to brand-new builds.

The center of the neighborhood is 51st Avenue at Centennial, where former industrial buildings now hold coffee shops, restaurants, and a taproom. A grain silo there carries a large mural of longtime resident Lee Estes, painted in 2017 by Australian artist Guido van Helten. Like Sylvan Park next door, many streets are named for states, such as Indiana, Louisiana, and Michigan Avenues.
